Each fall, MERT runs a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) Drill. MCIs are events which involve multiple injuries and require coordination of a large number of EMS resources. All MERT members are prepared to serve in an actual MCI – they’ve undergone training in general body meetings, are certified in two FEMA courses (Intro to the Incident Command System and Intro to the National Incident Management System), and practice in the MERT MCI Drill. Drill scenarios have included an active shooter, bombing, bus crash, and chemical spill. MERT partners with the Philadelphia Medical Reserve Corps, Allied Barton Security, Department of Public Safety, Philadelphia Fire Department, and a Wharton Management Team to create the event.
