Continuing Medical Education

EMTs in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are required to complete 24 hours of Continuing Medical Education training (CMEs) every three years to maintain their EMT certification. Twelve of these 24 hours must be medical or trauma education. CME courses are usually seminar based classes that last anywhere from 2-4 hours. See the Pennsylvania CME for EMTs Handbook for more information.

MERT offers the possibility for EMTs to complete their CMEs through a variety of options. MERT organizes weekly training meetings for its members, some of which are eligible for CME credits. In addition, members of MERT travel to the National Collegiate EMS Foundation conference every year, where they may attend two days worth of CME seminars to count towards their recertification. The Pennsylvania Department of Health also offers CME credits for online courses taken through their Learning Management System (in order to access this site, you may have to click here first). MERT members can access all their CME records and search for upcoming CME classes by signing on to the Pennsylvania Department of Health EMS Portal website.

Also, current members may find that PA Prepared is a valuable resource for continuing education hours.
